Measuring a horse for a fly sheet is important to ensure that the sheet fits properly and provides the necessary protection against flies and other insects. Fly sheets use exactly the same measurement as turnouts and stable blankets — your horse's True Size, in inches. There's no separate fly sheet math to do. Measure once, and that number is usually your size for blankets and fly sheets. Here are the steps to follow when measuring your horse for a fly sheet:

Stand your horse on a level surface with their head facing forward.

Using a soft measuring tape, measure the distance from the center of your horse's chest to the point where the sheet will end on their rump. This is usually the base of the tail, but can vary depending on the style of the fly sheet.

Record this measurement in inches or centimeters.

Measure the distance from the center of your horse's chest to the point where the sheet will end on their side. This is usually just behind the elbow.

Record this measurement in inches or centimeters.

Finally, measure the distance from the center of your horse's chest to the center of their tail.

Find your horse's True Size
Using a soft measuring tape, measure from A (the center point of the chest), across the widest point of the shoulder, and to B (the center point of your horse's rear, under the tail). Keep the tape level and taut — easiest with two people. That measurement, in inches, is your horse's True Size.
Already know your turnout size? It's the same number. Use it.

Between two sizes? Size up. A fly sheet lives on your horse for weeks at a time, so a fraction too long is far kinder than a fraction too tight.
Sizes marked "limited" aren't carried across every line — fly sheets are usually made in a narrower range than turnouts, most commonly 66" to 84". If your horse falls outside that, give us a call and we'll tell you who makes it.
